Breadcrumbs are navigational links that show users where they are within a website’s hierarchy. Typically found near the top of a page, they look like a trail—Home > Blog > SEO > Backlinks. The name comes from the story of Hansel and Gretel leaving breadcrumbs to find their way back.

Breadcrumbs improve usability by letting visitors move easily between related pages without relying on the back button. They also help search engines understand site structure, providing clear context about how content fits together. This can enhance indexing and visibility in search results.

From an SEO perspective, breadcrumbs reinforce internal linking, spreading authority across key pages. They are especially useful for e-commerce sites or large blogs with multiple categories. Simple text-based breadcrumbs work best; avoid overly stylized versions that confuse readers. Implementing breadcrumb schema markup also allows Google to display them directly in search results, replacing long URLs with clear, readable paths.
