Banner ads are one of the oldest forms of online advertising. They are rectangular image or graphic ads that appear on websites, usually at the top, side, or within the content of a page. Their purpose is to attract attention and encourage clicks, leading users to a landing page or an offer. Even though many people associate banner ads with the early internet, they remain widely used in display advertising today.
The effectiveness of banner ads depends on design and placement. Eye-catching visuals, clear messaging, and a strong call to action are essential. Modern banners can also include animations or interactive elements. However, advertisers face challenges with banner blindness, a phenomenon where users subconsciously ignore them, and with ad blockers, which remove them entirely.
To overcome these issues, targeting is key. Display networks allow banner ads to be shown to specific audiences based on demographics, interests, or browsing behavior. Retargeting banners, which appear after someone has visited your site, are particularly effective because they remind users of products they already considered. While banners may not always deliver high click-through rates, they are valuable for building awareness and keeping brands visible across the web.
